The ancient town of Salerno, which became famous all over the world for its School of Medicine, one of the oldest institution of western countries, is renowned for its waterfront which is considered to be the longest in Italy.

Its centre is also interesting for the wonderful Duomo, dedicated to Saint Matthew. Built during the 11^th century, it contains mosaics, ambos, and numerous paintings, besides the funeral monument of the queen Margherita from Durazzo.

The Provincial Archaeological Museum, housed in the Saint Benedict complex, contains lot of remains which testify the ancient history of the town and its surroundings.
